History

Artie Cutler opened the original Carmine’s on the Upper West Side in 1990, determined to recreate the feeling of an Italian-American wedding feast: mountains of food, everyone reaching across the table, nobody counting. The Theater District location followed two years later and became the flagship experience for Broadway crowds — an institution now run with the founder’s vision intact.

What to Order

Family-style is the whole point. The chicken parmigiana is the signature centerpiece; penne alla vodka and rigatoni with sausage and broccoli anchor the pasta list; linguine with clams and the veal dishes reward the second visit. The Caesar salad, tossed for the table, and fried calamari open the feast — and the titanic desserts close it for whoever survives.

The Space

A grand, nostalgic hall that channels the supper clubs of mid-century New York: dark wood, brass, walls of vintage photographs and tables dressed for groups. The energy is festive rather than refined — laughter carries, platters gleam, and the room hums like a celebration that never quite ends.
