Boucherie: A Postcard of Paris in the West Village

Some restaurants transport you; Boucherie does it wholesale. One step off a West Village corner and you are in a grand brasserie glowing with amber light — mirrors, brass, marble and the perfume of garlic butter. It is the rare New York room that feels both like an occasion and like somewhere you could return every week.

The Concept

Boucherie celebrates joie de vivre in its most literal form: classic French brasserie cooking crossed with a serious steakhouse, guided by traditional butchery and unhurried, natural sourcing. The West Village flagship fills the historic building of the former Circle Repertory Theater, with more than three hundred seats spread across dining room, counter and gallery.

What to Order

Begin with the escargots — widely argued to be the city’s best, arriving in bubbling garlic-parsley butter made for bread-dipping — and the silky mousse de foie gras. The steak frites is the signature main; dry-aged côte de boeuf turns dinner into ceremony, and French onion soup, duck confit and profiteroles complete the canon. The wine list runs deep and Gallic.

The Space

Warm amber light, mirrored walls, polished brass and cascades of greenery under high ceilings: a room composed like a film set of golden-age Paris. An intimate second-floor gallery hosts quieter dinners and private events, while the sidewalk café does its best Saint-Germain impression.

Who It’s For

Anniversaries and date nights, francophiles in withdrawal, celebration dinners that deserve candlelight — and Sunday afternoons when only onion soup will do.

Good to Know

Is it good for a special occasion? One of the neighborhood’s most romantic big rooms — book the gallery level for extra intimacy.

Do they serve brunch? Yes — weekend brunch with French classics is one of the most pleasant ways to experience the room in daylight.

What if I don’t eat meat? Onion soup, seafood plates, salads and sides assemble a genuinely French meatless dinner.

How far ahead should I book? A few days for weekend dinner; weeknights are gentler. The café seats welcome walk-ins.

Is it child-friendly? Earlier hours, yes — the brasserie format, frites and profiteroles win most children over.
