Keens Steakhouse: Dinner Inside a Living Museum
Some tables come with bread; at Keens they come with a hundred and forty years of New York hanging overhead. This Herald Square landmark has fed the city since 1885, and dinner here still feels like being admitted somewhere — past the pipe-lined ceilings, into rooms where the Gilded Age never quite ended.
History
Keens began as the dining room of a theater-district social circle and outlived the entire district around it. Its pipe club counted Babe Ruth, Theodore Roosevelt and Albert Einstein among tens of thousands of members whose churchwarden pipes still cover the ceilings. Women were famously barred until Lillie Langtry took the house to court in 1905 and won; the playbill Abraham Lincoln held the night of his assassination hangs upstairs. The James Beard Foundation crowned it an American Classic.
What to Order
The legendary mutton chop — in truth a towering saddle of lamb — has been the house signature for over a century and arrives like a monument. The dry-aged porterhouse for two is the celebratory alternative, prime rib the Sunday-best classic, Dover sole the graceful outlier. Begin with oysters, finish with the deep scotch list and let the evening stretch.
The Space
A sequence of intimate, wood-dark rooms — Lincoln, Bull Moose, Lambs — each papered with portraits, playbills and artifacts, all beneath ceilings tiled in clay pipes. White tablecloths, low light and unhurried service complete a room that no designer could replicate, because it was never designed — it accumulated.
Who It’s For
Anniversaries, milestone birthdays, closing celebrations and any dinner meant to be remembered. Bring visiting parents, a serious date or anyone who believes a restaurant can be a piece of history you can taste.
Good to Know
How far ahead should I book? Several days minimum for prime evening tables; weeks for large parties in the historic rooms.
Mutton chop or porterhouse? The chop is richer and gamier, a once-in-a-lifetime signature; the dry-aged porterhouse is pure classic steakhouse. Ideally, come twice.
Can dinner be split for two? Yes — the chop and porterhouse are portioned for sharing, and the kitchen splits gracefully.
Is it stuffy? Not at all — reverent but warm, with servers who enjoy telling the house stories if you ask.
What should non-meat eaters order? Dover sole is a serious dish in its own right, and the appetizers and sides assemble a fine meal.

From the very first minute you walk in, the atmosphere takes you back to a time when life was enjoyed simply. I ordered the filet mignon, and it was the tastiest aged medium-rare I've ever had. Serve it with sides of you…
My friend tried the lamb chop, and I ordered the pan-seared salmon. My friend loved the lamb chop, and the salmon was decent too. The vegetables served with the fish were a little bland and slightly bitter. The shishito…
