rewriting its own menu

Up Thai has held its corner of Lenox Hill long enough to become a default answer to “where do we eat tonight” — and it holds it by refusing to freeze. The kitchen builds around what its farmers and suppliers bring in, so a block of the menu rotates while the Thai canon stays put.

The Concept · The Story

The house position is stated plainly by the restaurant itself: source fresh from suppliers the team actually knows, keep traditional Thai flavour intact, and rewrite familiar recipes rather than soften them for uptown. That runs as two menus side by side — the permanent canon of curries, noodles and satay, and a seasonal specials block the chefs open when produce allows. The same kitchen handles large-group catering, so a full house never tips the place into takeaway logic.

What to Order

The signature list is where it pulls away from ordinary neighbourhood Thai. Up Thai Fried Rice Claypot arrives with sea scallop, shrimp and Chinese sausage; Poh Tak is a Thai bouillabaisse of salmon, scallop, squid and mussels in spicy herb broth with garlic bread; Soft Shell Crab Gaeng Kua sits in a southern red curry with turmeric and lemongrass; Duck Tamarind and Beef Short Rib Panang cover the richer end. Branzino appears in half a dozen forms — steamed with ginger and scallion, or fried crisp with mango and pomelo salad. Start with Tung Thong, quail eggs wrapped in wonton skin; finish Thai, with mango sticky rice in season or a chocolate Thai-tea lava cake. The bar keeps pace: the lemongrass-basil Uptini, the KOPI Thai espresso martini, Thai beer on draught, and yuzu lemonade in a mason jar for everyone else.

The Space

Roughly seventy seats in a rustic wood-panelled room hung with mosaic lanterns and floral accents — bright enough for a working lunch, low-lit enough that dinner reads as a date. Two-tops and long tables sit equally well, so birthdays and girlfriends’ dinners land here without a private room. The modest frontage gives nothing away: the room only opens up once you are inside.

Good to Know

Should I book ahead? For dinner, yes — reservations run through Resy, and an early table is the easiest door in.

Can the heat be adjusted? Yes. Plenty of dishes are built spicy by design, but the kitchen calibrates to your tolerance if you say so when ordering.

Is there enough for vegetarians and gluten-free guests? The menu marks both: spring rolls, mango-avocado salad and Thai salad are vegetarian, and pad thai is prepared gluten-free.

What works for a large group or a party at home? The dining room takes long tables, and a separate catering menu covers larger orders off-site.

Is lunch different from dinner? It is a menu of its own — one-plate specials such as Kao Kha Moo, Moo Dang and crispy duck over rice.

Opening hours

Day

Hours

Monday

11:30–22:00

Tuesday

11:30–22:00

Wednesday

11:30–22:00

Thursday

11:30–22:00

Friday

11:30–23:00

Saturday

12:00–23:00

Sunday

12:00–22:00

Photos

<details>

Show 2 more photos

</details>

Visitor reviews

melanie tsoi

15 May 2026
· ★ 10.0/10

THE BEST THAI FOOD I'VE HAD IN NEW YORK, PERIOD.
